Afghan Taliban cracks down on ISIS, multiple killings and arrests
The Taliban has given its special forces the goal of selectively targeting Islamic State or ISIS fighters across the country. In the future, ISIS fighters could become a constant headache for the Taliban.
The German news agency DPA quoted Taliban spokesman Bilal Karimi as saying that Taliban forces had already killed or arrested several members of ISIS.
The Taliban call ISIS fighters "corrupt forces." According to Bilal Karimi, ISIS has apparently no stronghold in the country, but its "invisible" presence will be eliminated.
The Taliban did not say where the crackdown on ISIS fighters had begun, but local media reported that the Taliban had carried out operations in the capital, Kabul, and in the eastern province of Nangarhar.
ISIS has claimed responsibility for most of the attacks against the Taliban in recent days, most of them in the Afghan province of Nangarhar.
The province has long had local fighters who have been working for ISIS. The province has seen armed clashes between Taliban and ISIS fighters in the past.
In the past, the Taliban have also accused the Ashraf Ghani government of providing support to ISIS to fight the Taliban.
The Islamic State of Khorasan was first declared in 2015, and since then it has carried out dozens of deadly attacks, targeting mostly the Hazara community.
